About Us

Celebrating who we are, Where we’ve been, And where we’re headed.

The Harrison Museum is a place of memory, a space for inquiry, and a contributor to regional and national conversations about history, art, and justice.

At the reimagined Harrison Museum of African American Culture, you’ll find a new appreciation for the contributions of people from African descent, including African Americans right here at home.

Our revolving exhibits tell the story of Black life and legacy in the Blue Ridge region. From historical photographs and oral histories to art, artifacts, and textiles, every piece contributes to our cultural memory.

Founded in 1985 through a community-led effort to preserve the historic Harrison School — Roanoke’s first high school built for Black students — the museum has grown into a cultural institution serving the entire Blue Ridge region.

In 2025, the museum reestablished its physical presence in Northwest Roanoke with the opening of its new home at Melrose Plaza. This 10,000 square foot space includes gallery and performance areas, a screening room, educational facilities, and a retail space focused on Black makers and entrepreneurs.
